All of my life I was taught very little about nutrition.In growing up I remember my mother telling us to eat our fruits and vegetables.It was the meat, potatoes, white bread, and dessert that got most of the attention.
In school I was the little fat boy who was picked last to play on any team.Never in the light, just off to one side, getting by year by year.
In my adult years it was just more of the same with diet and exercise.It was the philosophy that we should live to eat and so we did. Who ever paid attention to trans fats, saturated fats, hydrogenated oil, high fructose corn syrup, and all the other things that can kill you.You just go through life feeling just O.K. and think that is all there is.
On February 9, 2007 I was invited to a seminar.The subject of the seminar was about health, eating right, the problems with the standard American Diet, and the epidemic in the United State with the dramatic increase of major diseases such as Cancer, Cardiovascular disease, Stroke, and Diabetes.I went to the seminar weighing 225 lbs and feeling sick and tired of being sick and tired.What I heard and saw changed my life.From that point I took a 180 in my life.I changed what I was eating and what I was doing to my body.I saw a dramatic change in my health and energy.I began to lose weight and saw a steady weight lost of about 2-3 lbs each week.In a little over 4 months I had lost the 45 lbs of excess weight I was carrying around.
Now for the best part.Feeling the effects of good health my focus turned to exercise.I wanted to give my body strength.I started to look for a trainer to take what I had done to that point and build my body to a point where I should be.I wanted to be able to do those things I did when I was younger.In my search for the best trainer possible, I was introduced to Heather Golden, of Fit For Gold.I have been training with her three days a week for the past 3 months or so.I am amazed at her ability to read what I need each day.Her care and concern for me and the precision in her work.I have been able to systematically build strength in all areas of my body and have seen real results.My strength was so low when I started.I can now do pull-ups and almost bench press my body weight.Her personalized training has made a real difference.I look forward to each workout day and getting closer to reaching my goals.

Heather's Strength Training Class
I always try to remain active, but I have never really seen any improvement in my body until now. I have been taking Heather's strength training classes since January 2005. It has been a great class. I have noticed my muscles have gotten toner and more defined. I also am noticeably stronger, and have more energy. The class is during the lunch hour which makes it extremely convenient and almost impossible to skip.

Summary of My Experience with Fit for Gold and Heather Golden.
On first meeting Heather, I was immediately struck by her physique. She has the most awesome triceps of any woman I have ever seen. Not the men's variety of bulky sinew, but definitely there, solid yet smooth and still feminine and in balance with her tall and powerful yet feminine frame. The condition of her body speaks an immediate testimony to her capability to improve a body's condition, especially when she explained a bit of her history and the condition she was once in. She has trained Military officers in Monterey as well as kids. And unlike other trainers that get certified then never again crack a book, she constantly studies and stays current with research in the field and has done so for over 15 years.
She explained that the workout is only half the task of achieving my personal fitness objectives with diet (what, when and how much) being the other half. Everything she said made sense and was consistent with what I had read on the topic. She was also concerned about my gung - ho approach and cautioned me about the pitfalls of over training. My personal objectives were to add muscle, as I had always been the skinny kid turned skinny middle-aged man. I had already trained for a year and hit a wall in development. She explained that I was over training. We discussed specific objectives and time frames and began the next week.
She was creative with each session keeping focus on the goal, and mixing up the specific exercises to hit the targeted muscle groups. Some time compound moves, sometimes muscle specific moves. She is a stickler to training proper form, i.e. angle and straightness of back, hand position, movement of elbow or knees throughout the movement, etc to hit the target and reduce risk of injury. I learned a great deal from her in each of these sessions. She also made specific suggestions on managing the diet, protein content, sugar content, types of fats as well as appropriate quantities and timing to keep muscle development progressing.
One of my goals was to be working out on the bench at 200lbs by the year's end (December). Its now March (3 months later) and I am working out with 200 and a one rep max of 240. One of my goals was to have 20-inch upper arms, and she gently indicated then that this might be beyond reach in this time frame, and she was right as they are currently at 16.5. The biggest effect she had bringing balance to the program. I had never worked my back hard or given it any attention. The imbalance that I was headed for would have resulted in injury. For the first time in my life I have lats, rhomboids and a visible trapezius and the beginnings of a V-shape!
She is not just for wanna-be body builders as her training is well suited to anyone that wants to improve their physical condition, from the seriously over weight, to young people that want to improve the direction of their development, to serious athletes that want to hone their strength for competition. Her rates are reasonable. The cost of a trainer is far offset by the expense of recovery or time wasted due to NOT having a trainer. After experiencing Heather, and watching the "techniques" of other trainers, there is no way I would use anyone that does not have the training, the commitment to the safe pursuit of achieving your objects, and the professionalism of Heather Golden and Fit for Gold.
And just for the record, Heather maintains high standards of professionalism and we had a great time working out. She is virtually never late, always smiling, respectful, and pays attention to the client. I can recommend without hesitation to anyone that wants to have a stronger, healthier body to see Heather Golden. You will be glad you did.
